Wilred Leisure Sports Club from Curtorim booked their spot in the quarter-finals of the Varca Panchayat Cup with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Cuncolim Union at the Varca Ground on Sunday.
The match started with Cuncolim Union taking an early lead through Novian Belki in the sixth minute, but Wilred Leisure responded almost instantly. Anselm Fernandes struck back with a quick equaliser, and just five minutes later, he doubled his tally with a clinical finish that left Cuncolim’s goalkeeper Sachin Prabhakar Velip with no chance.
Despite Cuncolim’s relentless pressure in the second half, Wilred keeper Johnson Bogato held firm, ensuring his side held onto the advantage. Fernandes’ decisive brace earned him the Man of the Match award, and Wilred Leisure now look ahead confidently to the last-eight clash.
Hockey:
In hockey action, Father Agnel School, Pilar, emerged champions of the Inter-School U-17 Boys Hockey Championship at the Peddem Sports Complex in Mapusa. Organised by St Michael Sports and Cultural Association in collaboration with St Michael’s School and Goans Hockey, the tournament witnessed some exciting displays of skill.
Father Agnel’s team impressed throughout with their coordination, technique, and team spirit, ultimately lifting the title and marking a proud moment for the school.
