Stabbing Rekindles Fears of Rising Crime on Margao Station Road

What began as yet another day of public frustration over the worsening condition of Margao’s station road took a frightening turn by evening, when a man was stabbed in the middle of the busy stretch. The incident has once again brought simmering concerns about lawlessness in the area to the forefront.

According to police, the stabbing took place on Monday evening during what appears to have been a petty quarrel. The attacker, still unidentified, allegedly plunged a knife into the victim’s abdomen. Bystanders rushed the injured man to the South Goa District Hospital, but as his condition grew critical, he was shifted to Goa Medical College and Hospital in Bambolim.

The Margao police have launched an investigation and are waiting for a forensic team to examine the scene. But for local residents, the incident has only deepened a long-standing sense of insecurity.

“This used to be a peaceful area. Now we hear about thefts, fights, and drunkards creating a nuisance almost every day,” one resident told The Goan. “These people have no fear because police rarely show up. They come only after a major incident—never for regular patrolling.”

Earlier that very morning, another resident, Vivek Naik, had already voiced similar concerns. He described seeing drunk men and troublemakers sprawled along the roadside during his morning walks. “We’ve been asking authorities for months to clean up the station road, but no one listens,” he said.

He also pointed out that the station road is not just a local thoroughfare—it is the first and last impression many visitors get of the city. “What memories will they take home when the city’s entry point looks like this? We hope the authorities finally take note and act.”

With the latest stabbing, residents fear the situation is spiralling out of control. Many are now urging police to step up patrolling and restore the sense of safety that Margao’s station road once enjoyed.
